Ssangyong E&C Delivers Atlantis The Royal, Dubai’s New Iconic Ultra-Luxury Hotel

2023-02-21

After some eight years of construction, Atlantis The Royal, the latest ultra-luxury hotel on a global level, has finally opened to the public. Surpassing the engineering feat of the Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore, dubbed “the architectural miracle of the 21st century,” this brand-new resort has already raised the bar for upscale hotels worldwide.

Ssangyong E&C won this project in Dubai, UAE in December 2015. Construction for Atlantis The Royal began in July the following year and continued for around 80 months until its successful completion in mid-February this year.

The construction of Atlantis The Royal entailed a mega project that took place on Palm Jumeirah, an artificial island in Dubai, UAE. The project involved the building of three hotel towers (with a maximum of 44 floors) offering 791 rooms and three ultra-luxury residential towers with 231 housing units. The total construction cost was a whopping USD 1.254 billion.

Remarkably, this hotel resort offers a total of 94 swimming pools, including an uber-luxurious pool that is a grade above the iconic infinity pool atop the Marina Bay Sands hotel. On top of this, all guest rooms offer a magnificent view of the Arabian Gulf, and the 520-square-meter Signature Penthouse comes with a private infinity pool at this one-of-a-kind world-class resort.

The project was commissioned by the Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD), one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds and the largest shareholder of Ssangyong E&C at the time of 2015. As a lead contractor, the company won the contract together with Belgium-based BESIX Group in December 2015.

An atypical S-shaped architectural marvel resembling stacked blocks

Atlantis The Royal boasts an unconventional exterior. Viewed from above, the structure is curved in the shape of an S and, viewed from the front, resembles stacked Lego blocks. The only one of its kind anywhere, this mind-blowing design was certain to make this hotel resort yet another global landmark alongside Marina Bay Sands, once completed.

The 44-story hotel tower and the 39-story residential tower are two independent buildings connected by a skybridge installed 80 meters above ground. The skybridge is a steel structure. Its 920-ton frame was first built on the ground and transformed through the finishing process into a mammoth structure weighing 1,300 tons. This gigantic structure was then lifted to the height of 80 meters for installation using special construction techniques.

On the rooftop of this skybridge is a 90-meter-long infinity pool known as the Sky Pool, where guests can enjoy a panoramic view of Dubai’s distinctive skyline and the Arabian Gulf.  In fact, Atlantis the Royal offers a total of 94 swimming pools, 48 in the hotel tower and 46 in the residential tower. The hotel lobby features four glamorous aquariums to entice visitors.

54 consultants from 14 countries collaborated on the design work alone

From the design phase, it seemed clear that construction would be an extremely challenging undertaking. One of the most challenging tasks was design. A total of 54 consultants from 14 countries worked together to design this ultra-luxury hotel resort that would become a new Dubai landmark. Since only a few design firms operated local branches in Dubai, while most others were based in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, and other parts of the world, it was difficult to ask and answer questions and coordinate opinions.

Regarding the engineering challenges involved, even the executives of BESIX, Ssangyong E&C’s partner, commented that this was a more challenging site than Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building with 163 floors. BESIX is a world-renowned contractor best known for its role in the construction of Burj Khalifa, another Dubai landmark.

“With the delivery of Atlantis The Royal, a world-class ultra-luxury hotel resort, Ssangyong E&C has once again demonstrated its stature as the preeminent leader in the overseas high-end construction market, with the highest number of contracts signed,” a Ssangyong E&C official said. “Building on this success, we will step up our efforts to secure high-end construction contracts in Dubai and the rest of the Middle East.”
