Ssangyong E&C Dispatches “Waterboys” to Project Sites for Workers’ Health

2020-09-01

Amid the second wave of COVID-19, coupled with a series of typhoons and heat waves, Ssangyong E&C is engaging in diverse activities to promote the health of exhausted workers on its project sites.

The company announced on September 1 that it had provided neck coolers and sweat-absorbing pads to construction workers and that company health managers disguised as “waterboys” had been roaming around project sites to offer ice water to workers.

Moreover, the company provides temperature and blood pressure checks to workers before the beginning of the day’s work, and offers refreshments (e.g. ice cream and watermelon punch) during the hottest hours of the day, to alleviate the heat exhaustion experienced by workers. Each construction site also has outdoor ice machines, with the staff lounge equipped with an air cooler, an air conditioner, and portable beds.

At the same time, every construction site is disinfected twice a week, and workers are regularly checked for high temperatures and other symptoms to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“We have prepared an on-site health & safety checklist for the summer, along with health & safety guidelines for the heat wave season. These resources contain a list of possible summer calamities, such as heat suffocation, heat stroke and food poisoning, as well as first aid measures for each situation and safety management strategies,” a company official said.
