"I Know Ssangyong."
 
In Singapore, one can find people who know Ssangyong E&C without much difficulty. &ldquoSsangyong E&C has given Singaporeans an impression of Koreans as strong and positive people," said Lim, a Singaporean native whom we&rsquove met on Marina Bay, Singapore on December 12. "Former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew spared little praise on the construction site completed by Ssangyong E&C,&rdquo he added.
 
Mr. Lee said in a 1985 speech to the 20th anniversary of Singapore&rsquos independence, "Koreans are strong people and we all confirmed it in Raffles City." Raffles City was built by Ssangyong E&C.
 
This office, hotel, and shopping complex was a large-scale national project for the expansion of tourism infrastructure in the 1980s. The high-rise construction method used at this time became the precursor of the modern skyscraper construction techniques. It is considered to be the crown jewel of the Korean construction industry that symbolizes its expansion to the global market.
 
Some Korean industry insiders say that Ssangyong E&C may actually be more prominent and appreciated in Singapore than in Korea. Ssangyong E&C has a reputation as a company that safely completes the construction of the most difficult roads in Singapore. This is based on the Korean firm&rsquos success in building major landmarks in Singapore, including Raffles City Singapore, Raffles Hotel, W Hotel, Downtown Subway Second Stage Project, Marina Coastal Expressway, Capital Tower, Submenu City and Marina Bay Sands Hotel.
 
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the son of Lee Kuan Yew, attended the opening ceremony of Downtown Line and showed interest in Ssangyong E&C&rsquos construction site. Stressing the difficulties inherent in the project, Lee said, &ldquodue to the very narrow work area and the difficulty of constructing under Coacher Canal, the contractor had to find an ingenious construction method and moved the road more than 30 times in the last 5 years in the Rochor section.&rdquo  
 
While the section is only 1 kilometer long, it is said to involve extreme difficulty because the subway had to pass 5 meters under the existing subway line and two stations had to be built under Ruthe canal. Ssangyong E&C was the sole contractor for this section.
