Downtown Lane sector 921…received grand prize from the LTEA 2016, the most prestigious award in Singapore Ssangyong Engineering and Construction (Chairman and CEO Kim Suk-joon) received the Best Managed Rail / Road Infrastructure Award at the Land Transport Excellence Awards(LTEA) 2016, which is Singapore’s most prestigious award presented to the civil engineering/infrastructure industry, for the completed Downtown Lane sector 921 project winning against the competition from world-renowned Japanese and European construction companies. This is the first time for a South Korean construction company to be the sole recipient of this distinguished award. Land Transport Excellence Awards(LTEA) is presented by the Land Transport Authority(LTA) on behalf of the Singapore government biannually since its inauguration in 2008 to recognize the infrastructure industry partners and individuals who have made significant contributions to Singapore land transport (road, rail, subway). The candidates are ed from completed projects involving complex and highly advanced technologies and accident-free sites since initiation to completion. The judging panel consists of members from LTA, field experts, academia, and government agencies and meticulous assessment is carried out for approximately 5 months. Due to the high evaluation standards, being ed as a candidate itself, regardless of winning the award, is considered as full recognition of the capability and expertise of the candidate company.

There are three categories for the awards which are design, safety, and best management. Best management is given to only one company based on comprehensive evaluation of construction process and quality control. This year approximately 50 sites were in the competition.

The DTL sector 921, which received the award, was considered as extremely complex section as existing subway line was only 5 meters above the site and two subway stations were constructed under the Rochor Canal. Even though the construction section is approximately 1 kilometer, all the existing major subway construction techniques (NATM, TBM, Open-Cut) had to be applied as 10 lane road and Rochor Canal on the ground above had to be shifted and detoured more than 50 times during seven years. The DTL sector 921 also made headlines with the high bidding price of 700billion won per 1km, that is, 700million won per 1m. Of the total DTL line, this sector required the most advanced technique hence the most expensive site.
Notably, accomplishment was even more astonishing as the site did not record a single accident for 16million man hour, a world record as of 2015. On December 26, 2015, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong specifically commented and lauded the sector 921 during the opening ceremony of Downtown Line 2.
Kim Woo-sang, site manager of Ssangyong E&C said, “receiving the most distinguished award in the field of civil engineering/infrastructure winning against global construction companies reaffirms that Ssangyong E&C is equipped with world-best competitiveness in infrastructure area as well as high-end building construction.”
