Ssangyong E&C Lands $153M Deal to Build ASML Korea’s New Campus

2023-03-13

Ssangyong E&C and ASML announced on March 3 that they signed a contract to build the latter’s new Korean headquarters (campus) in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province. ASML is the world’s leading semiconductor equipment company based in the Netherlands, and the project is valued at KRW 200 billion (approx. USD 153 million).

Located in Dongtan 2 District in Song-dong, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, an area near the Dongtan Junction of the Gyeongbu Expressway, ASML Korea’s new campus will consist of two 11-story buildings (with four underground floors), covering a total floor area of 74,418 m2. The campus will be home to business, training, and research facilities.

One of the world’s largest semiconductor equipment suppliers, ASML is also the only supplier of extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) photolithography machines. They are used to print circuits on microchips based on a specific design, which is the most important process during semiconductor production. The company reported a whopping EUR 21.2 billion in net sales in 2022.

To facilitate the establishment of ASML’s new campus in Korea, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) has been working with Gyeonggi Province, Hwaseong City, Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and other parties since 2020, and signed an investment MoU with ASML in 2021 for the establishment of its Hwaseong semiconductor cluster. Furthermore, the Ministry has been making steady efforts to ease regulations that may hinder ASML’s investment in Korea, including a recently announced plan to lift restrictions on next-generation EUV equipment.

Ssangyong E&C is said to have received outstanding reviews for its bidding presentation and technical proposals during a comprehensive tender evaluation process that considered both price and technology criteria. This allowed the company to become a preferred bidder and eventually secure the project.

“Our winning the contract to build a new headquarters for the world’s top semiconductor equipment manufacturer is a great feat with major implications,” Yoo Jong-sik, Executive Director of Ssangyong E&C said. “We pledge to deliver the very highest quality construction to help Korea attract further investment from ASML.”
